I— The pH scale

pH scale

pH stands for "potential of hydrogen" or "presence of hydrogen ions".

The pH is a measure that ranges from 0 to 14.

pH is measured with a pH meter or with pH paper (or pH indicator paper).

II— Acidic, basic, or neutral solutions

pH scale

A liquid is:
- acidic if its pH is between 0 and 7 (0 < pH < 7),

- neutral if its pH is equal to 7, and

- basic if its pH is between 7 and 14 (7 < pH < 14).

III— Highly acidic or highly basic solutions

pH scale

A liquid with a pH close to 0 is highly acidic.
A liquid with a pH close to 14 is highly basic.

Highly acidic and highly basic solutions are corrosive and dangerous.
